Architectural and investor competition for a residential quarter in Wernau am Neckar
The city of Wernau am Neckar is planning a new urban quarter at Adlerstrasse Ost III in Wernau with a future-oriented, flexible residential development for a socially mixed resident structure. In addition, the new district is to be characterized by a high level of design quality in terms of architecture and urban development, as well as by the way in which the green and landscape spaces are used.
The architectural and investor competition included the development of an adequate functional and architectural concept that takes into account the urban planning specifications and leads to a lively and stable quarter.
PLAN FORWARD GmbH, together with GWG Gesellschaft für Wohnungs- und Gewerbebau Baden-Württemberg AG, participated in the competition with a preliminary selection process and was awarded a commendation for its contribution (Lot 4).
Following the urban design, a mixture of single-family townhouses and family apartments with different apartment sizes was planned in order to achieve the desired good social mix and an attractive housing offer, also for young families. Furthermore, PLAN FORWARD deliberately selected a narrow townhouse type, which requires an economical planning with a good ratio of usable space to costs.
The open space between the two buildings is enriched by high-quality uses: green spaces with seating and play areas, as well as flower beds with shady trees and shrubs.
The development on top of the elevated underground parking garage enhances the quality of living: residents on the first floor have a natural privacy screen for their terraces and living rooms. The facade pattern of staggered windows and loggias reemphasizes the playful design approach. Wooden elements at the windows are combined with the structured, lightly plastered facade.
