Project description
The „Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW“ is planning the construction of a new research building on the grounds of the mathematical institutes of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) in Münster. The "Centre of Mathematics Münster (CMM)" will link the mathematical sub-disciplines and related sciences. PLAN FORWARD GmbH was commissioned to provide the planning services of performance levels 4 to 9 as well as partial services of performance level 3.
The CMM research building is to play a key role in a new holistic campus design. The goal is to increase the international visibility of Münster as a mathematics location and attract excellent young scientists from all over the world.
The approximately 3,500-square-meter, five-story CMM building will be built on an undeveloped site on Orléans-Ring near the Coesfelder Kreuz intersection. The focus of the concept is on collaboration between the scientists from the various mathematical subdivisions, which is why openness and flexibility characterize the building philosophy. Atriums and glass walls are designed to facilitate spontaneous communication and collaboration, while movable panel elements facilitate mathematical discussions.
The focus point of the design are the interaction areas and atriums, which link the different usecases. The office-, meeting-, and library-areas stretched around them are oriented toward this openly designed interior. Networking is further facilitated through the opening to the campus and the connection to the neighboring institute building to the outside. A curtain metal façade in honeycomb structure envelops the building, reflecting the interconnectedness of the floors and emphasizing its special character.
Parallel to the research building, EMU plans to gradually replace the buildings of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science with new ones. The CMM with its eye-catching, crystalline metal façade is to become the entrance building and architectural highlight of the new Math Campus at Coesfelder Kreuz.
