Project description
The city of Witten intends to extend the Albert-Martmöller-Gymnasium (AMG) by a wing of specialist rooms for the departments of art, music, computer science, biology, chemistry and physics as well as a self-study center. W+P was commissioned with the general planning and will be supported from the approval planning (LPH 4) onwards by its sister company PLAN FORWARD.
The gross floor area (GFA) of the new building of approx. 3,082 m² was distributed to the respective subject areas or subject room clusters in close coordination with the school. This distribution reflects the educational mission statement and concept of the school.
In the innovative room concept that emerged, dispenses with corridor areas as far as possible. The specialist room clusters and rooms are accessed via a workshop area, which is intended to serve the differentiation of teaching in terms of subjects, but also across subjects. Since a special interior design quality results from the innovative room concept, special care is taken in the planning of the rooms and room relationships.
The new three-story building is to be connected to the existing three-story old building, with which it will share an existing stairwell. This new building configuration on the existing schoolyard area will create a new entrance situation for the school and divides the schoolyard area into several sub-areas with different open space qualities.
The new visibility of the entire school building in the urban environment requires heightened attention to design qualities. The urban climate protection goals and energy guidelines need to be respected.
In April 2023, the students of the high school will move into the new premises.
