Concept and construction of the temporary exhibition "Images of a Metropolis" in the folkwang Museum in Essen

The exhibition „Bilder einer Metropole“ focused on the big city and urban life in the form of artistic representation. 200 exhibits from the period of 1860 to 1900, works of art by the Impressionists and their contemporaries, illustrate the theme from the artist's point of view. The concept of this second special exhibition in the "Neues Museum Folkwang" was developed in cooperation with the museum architect Lorenzo Piqueras, the implementation and coordination was provided by PLAN FORWARD GmbH.

New image techniques were used to depict modern urban society, its work, leisure activities and the rapid transformation of a city. The exhibition was designed as a stroll of a flâneur through the city of Paris with a system of mobile partition walls. This created 13 spacious rooms in the temporary exhibition.

Even sensitive small exhibits could be displayed using stereoscopic walls. Canopies created a clear differentiation between light-sensitive daylight areas. The daylight and artificial lighting was adjusted to the lux numbers that could be tolerated here. Display cases tailored to the exhibition architecture enabled the display of light-sensitive photographs and postcards.
